The Magnificent Booby
Nature's most charmingly named seabird
Boobies are large, spectacular seabirds in the family Sulidae. Their name comes from the Spanish word "bobo", meaning foolish or clown, because early sailors found them hilariously tame and clumsy on land. In the air and water, however, they are absolute predators.
Blue-footed Booby
Famous for their vibrant blue feet, which males proudly display in an elaborate mating dance. The bluer the feet, the more attractive the mate!

Peru & Chile CoastFun Booby Facts
- Boobies can plunge-dive from heights of 24 meters (80 feet), hitting the water at up to 97 km/h. Air sacs in their skull protect their brain from impact.
- Blue-footed boobies get their blue feet from carotenoid pigments in the fish they eat. A healthy diet = bluer feet = more dates.
- They can see fish underwater while flying above and adjust their dive angle mid-plunge for pinpoint accuracy.
- Boobies have binocular vision — both eyes face forward, giving them excellent depth perception for diving.
- They have permanently closed nostrils for diving. Instead, they breathe through the corners of their mouths.
- A group of boobies is called a "congress" or a "trap". Yes, really.
- The blue-footed booby's mating dance involves the male lifting his feet one at a time in a slow, exaggerated strut while pointing his beak to the sky.
"In a world full of ordinary birds, be a booby — dive headfirst into everything you do."
